The Woodlands Trio Op.414
About “The Woodlands Trio Op.414″(Advanced)
This work is composed specifically for a Bb clarinet trio (S,S,S,) in three contrasting movements based on the form of a tone poem, (program music).
The Movements
This work is based on the call of a European cuckoo, whose famous call “Kook-Koo!” has inspired composers for generations.
Movement 1:
The beginning of the story: A lush, forest woodland scene with animals going about their daily chores and routines.
A pair of Cuckoos fly overhead but one of the birds gets separated in the high mountains by the strong winds. Her mate looks frantically for her but is unable to find her.
Movement 2:
The male cuckoo calls to his lost mate throughout the night but to no avail. The winds mockingly return his calls to him. He decides to look for her when there is light the next day.
Movement 3:
The male cuckoo takes to the air just as soon as sunrise begins and scours high and low looking for and calling to his lost mate.
However, just as he is exhausted and ready to fly back to his tree, he hears her calling to him. He races down from the high mountains and finds her injured but alive. The two are reunited and return home to the safety of their tree home deep in the forest.
