The Crossover Concerto Op.520
The Crossover Concerto for Eb Alto Saxophone & Piano Op.520
About The Crossover Concerto
The crossover Concerto is a one movement, advanced-level, multi-styled Concerto for alto saxophone and piano. The work is dedicated to legendary woodwind master and composer, Victor Morosco as Andy Firth & Victor Morosco have been friends for over 25 years.
The Structure
The work commences with an exposition played by the piano that builds and leads to the first saxophone entry of the main theme. (A-B).
Section (C) is set in the style of a tango that extends and explores the main theme.
The theme then returns at (D) before leading to an energetic Rock style at section (E) and sections G and H are set in a lively Latin feel which leads to section (I) which is set in a tango feel.A short cadenza follows at section (J) which leads to a short piano interlude at section (K). A new theme emerges at section (L) which is set in a lively rock feel that leads to section (M) set in a fast paced bebop feel.
A short syncopated lively tango feel follows at section (N) before leading back into a short passage suggestive of the first main theme before the work slows and eases into a relax groove with a light Jazz feel at section (O). The next sections (P & Q) are set in a lively syncopated samba that builds and leads to a powerful and tight final figure.
A rubato credenza follows at sections (S & T) as the cadenza recalls explores and features the themes and motives that have been stated since the commencement of work. The main theme then returns at sections (V & W) and the Rock feel returns at letter (X, Y and Z) before culminating on a high D4.
Next, a lively, Latin groove figure at letter (AA) a provides an energetic and exciting backdrop for a punchy saxophone section that is punctuated by increasingly rising high note figures. This feel continues through the (BB) and (CC) sections before the recapitulation of the first theme returns.
The final section of the work (DD) features the last statement of the main theme and leads to a final and dramatic glissando up to a high A3, and the end of the work.
