Description
Sonata for Flute No.1 Op.510
Sonata for Flute No.1 Op.510 is composed in the style of a 17th Century Baroque flute sonata without conforming strictly to the form and structure of the Baroque sonata style.
Although the work is mainly based on the style of a Baroque sonata, it does contain a touch of classical and romantic-styled writing here and there in order to give it a freshness and contemporary lustre. The flute part is edited by Australian flute virtuoso and educator, Jane Cavanagh.
The Movements
Movement 1: Allegro Con Spiritoso
Set in the key of G major, the feel of this movement is light-hearted and flourished. The main theme is stated, developed and finally returns after a series of transformations and modulations. The movement is short and acts as more of an introduction to the style and feel of the overall work than a fully-fledged movement.
Movement 2: Allegretto Con Brio
This movement is in three-eight time and in the key of D minor featuring a lot of contrapuntal and short fugal-styled writing between the flute soloist and piano.
Movement 3: Andante Con Expressione
This movement is designed to be somewhat reminiscent of JS Bach’s famous Siciliano from his Flute Sonata BWV 1031.
The melody is gentle and flowing and in the key of A minor accompanied by an arpeggiated accompaniment in the piano part.
Movement 1: Allegro Vivace
The final movement of the work is lively and set in the key of G minor.
This movement contains a lot of interplay, fugal and contrapuntal writing between the flute soloist and piano accompaniment.
The final cadence is that of a Tierce de Picardie so that although the main body of the movement is in G minor, the work actually begins and ends in G major.
