Mambo Del Diablo
About Mambo Del Diablo
“Mambo Del Diablo” (Mambo of the Devil) was composed for the Australian jazz drummer and big band leader, John Morrison to feature him when he appeared as guest artist with Andy Firth’s Big band in 2013.
The piece is scored in the style of Latin/Cuban mambo and features tightly voiced brass figures and fast moving chromatic unison lines or lush harmonised sections played by the saxes.
The arrangement features at one point or another, every section of the ensemble with small group sections, improvised choruses, full ensemble and solo sections for various players.
This arrangement is primarily designed to feature the drums and percussion section allowing for space to do so both with and without the full ensemble.
This arrangement is an advanced-level work and requires a well-practiced, tight and balanced ensemble as well as a skilled rhythm section.
The drummer and percussionist in particular need to be both energetic and virtuosic.
