The desire to write this book series comes from two major factors that are very important to me. The first factor is a severe lack of quality, authentically- crafted jazz study books for the clarinet.
There used to be some fabulous jazz clarinet books available only twenty years ago! Buddy DeFranco’s “hand in hand with Hanon” was an excellent resource for aspiring jazz clarinet students and players but this too has been discontinued. So, I have decided that rather than be part of the problem I would try to perhaps be part of the solution.
The other factor that inspired me to write this series is the fact that after a lifetime of playing both jazz and classical clarinet music, it seems a shame not to share some of what I have learned and developed as both a professional clarinet performer, educator and composer.
So, I decided that I would dig deeply into my experience and knowledge as a professional jazz clarinetist, composer and educator in an attempt to craft a three-level series of authentically styled jazz clarinet study books that students, players, teachers and professional players can enjoy and use for many years to come.
The three books have been graded as easy, intermediate and advanced. The studies in book 1 range from about a fourth-grade exam level study to a sixth and seventh-grade leveled studies in book two and then finally, a highly skilled to professional-level studies in book 3.
The Studies
Each study has been carefully crafted to sound authentic and to challenge the player to develop tonal, stylistic and technical skills in the various jazz-oriented styles that they cover. I have recorded each study as both a solo clarinet study as well as a performance with bass and drums so as to provide the harmonic context for each study.
There are no backing tracks for this series as the studies should always be performed as solo works.
Some of the studies are original conceptions whilst others are based on well-known jazz standards. I felt that it was important to do this so that the studies may act as a catalyst for improvisation and study of these standards.
The melodies for these tunes are not stated so it is highly recommended that the player or student research these songs further with a view to learning the melodies and chord progressions.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy playing these study books for many years to come and that they inspire you to listen to, study and play more jazz clarinet.
