About Sax in the City
“Sax in the City” is an advanced-level big band arrangement. The rhythmic, tonal and technical demands are challenging and require an ensemble that is experienced and tight.
The saxophone section in particular gets a thorough workout in this arrangement with figures in unison that must be played in sync and with the required articulations. The brass are scored to be punchy, syncopated and powerful.
The overall feel of the piece moves from a groovy funk to that of a Latin and back to funk again.
There is a written alto solo which can be improvised if preferred.
